B.Tech. FOOD TECHNOLOGY

 The Food Technology programme has been established to provide technical education in the field of Food Engineering and Technology. It meets the requirements of technical manpower at various levels by implementing a new concept of modular systems in technical education. The Food Processing Industry is among the fastest growing sectors in our country today, and currently, there is a demand for over one million trained/skilled people in this field.

Dealing with the processing of food stuff requires training in packaging and preservation of fruits, meat, cooked food, vegetables, juices and beverages. It also deals with the manufacturing of confectionary, snacks, chips and soft drink concentrates.

The Indian food industry is broadly classified into two sectors. These are: Primary food industry and Processed food industry. The first includes units engaged in rice milling, flourmills, legumes, oil seeds processing, manufacturing sugar and jaggery. The second includes various industries, relating to bakery, confectionary, meat, fish, fruits and vegetables, dairy, weaning food, etc.

Industrial Tours and Training
In order to provide exposure to industry and to add to the practical knowledge among students, tours are organized to visit industries namely, Parle, Mount Shivalik Brewery, Dairies, etc. Visits are also organized to food exhibitions like Aahar. Industrial training/projects are regular features of the curriculum.

Areas of Specialization are:

Bakery Technology, Cereal Technology, Oils and Fats, Confectionary, Nutrition and Dietetics, Meat Technology, Dairy Technology, processing of fruits and vegetables.

Career Prospects

  • Food technologists are employed in hotels, hospitals, packaging industries, cereal, sugar and rice mills, etc.
  • Food Corporation of India Ltd. and Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporations also recruit Food technologists.
  • Research and development laboratories offer many openings for food technologists and scientists.
