School of Languages, Literature and Society

The University offers Master's Degree programme in English, which is unique as it is a useful amalgam of Literary Studies and Language Pedagogy. The Objective of this programme is threefold:
1. to familiarize the student with the literary works of selected writers from 16th to 20th Century;
2. to familiarize the student with important trends /movements in literary studies; and
3. to give a comprehensive idea of the aspects of language and language pedagogy to the student with a view to prepare and train him/her to teach English proficiently at primary/secondary level.

The School also offers a three-year Integrated Programme, namely, BA (Hons.) in English, French, and German languages. Certainly, the main emphasis will be on learning these languages, but at the same time, efforts will be made to understand the available literature in the three languages and about the concerned societies. The significance of these languages can be seen for India in terms of growing trade and commerce, cultural interaction, and diplomatic relations in the changing world. At times, without adequate knowledge of these languages, collaborations and academic faculty/student exchange programmes do not materialize satisfactorily.

Teaching of these languages has been quite useful for the Indian State and Society. We intend to design the language courses in such a way that by way of these courses bilateral relations between India and the concerned countries can be promoted in a positive manner.

Business English Certificate (BEC) courses of the University of Cambridge (UK) are being offered at the University in collaboration with the British Council Division, New Delhi. JNU is a partner of the British Council Examinations Partnership Programme.

BEC programme is an internationally recognized qualification in English for seeking jobs. BEC courses aim to improve a student's confidence in using business English, particularly in speaking. There are practical examinations that focus on the application of language in dealing with real world business situations and set the standards for corporate communication. At JNU, Jaipur, the BEC courses are being offered to provide an edge to the students of Management and allied professional courses with a view to train them for better career prospects in the age of globalization.
