The School of Social Sciences offers employment-friendly programmes at M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. levels in Economics, Sociology, and Social Work. The M.A. level programmes are of two years duration (four-semesters). In every semester, there are four courses. Thus, in all, the M.A. programme has 16 courses, out of which 12 are compulsory and 4 are optional (i.e. chosen by students, out of the available courses at a given point of time).
The M.Phil. programme is of one-year duration spread over 2 semesters. There are 2 compulsory and 2 optional courses. Of the two compulsory courses, one is on theoretical orientations and the other is on methodology. Two courses are optional. In the first semester, two compulsory and one optional course are offered, and in the second semester, with the remaining one optional, a student is required to write a dissertation under supervision of a faculty member. The value of the Dissertation is equal to two courses and it is examined by an external expert, followed by a viva-voce (oral examination).

In case, a student is unable to complete the dissertation in two semesters, he/she may be allowed to re-register and submit the dissertation within 4 semesters. After successful completion of the M.Phil. programme, a student may be allowed admission to Ph.D. programme.
There is also a provision for Ph.D. registration without going through the M.Phil. stream. Based on fulfillment of minimum eligibility, a candidate is required to appear in a written test, followed by interview for admission to Ph.D. programme. Teachers and experienced persons may also be admitted directly to the Ph.D programme.
