Both Vijay Tendulkar and Mahesh Dattani are two Indian dramatists who are realistic in their approach of writings. They are keen observers of the society and always raise the important and burning issues of the society in their plays. In almost all of their plays both of them deal with the problems of the society in order to reform the society. In their plays we find the realistic description of the issues dealt with in the plays.

Their Characteristics:

• Both of them are also daring playwrights because in their plays they throw light on all the devilish aspects of Indian society.

• In their plays we find a lot of social taboos breaking like the plight of women in Indian society where the women are the victims of social taboos and violence in the society.

• In most of Tendulkar’s plays we find the theme of conflict between women and the society in which they live.

• Women are always found struggling against the male dominated society which is the symbol of power and which the women are victims.

• In his plays we find women treated as a commodity of male and as a victim of violence either emotionally or physically.

• But, on the other hand, they face the society boldly and finally emerged as a growing, evolving and powerful beings.

• This presentation of women against all the odds as powerful beings is, in fact, the breaking of taboos in Tendulkar’s plays.

• Women are always presented as trying for freedom and individuality. The same case we find in the plays of Mahesh Dattani.

Conclusion:

Thus we see that both Vijay Tendulkar and Mahesh Dattani are realistic playwrights who in their plays, deal with the evils of Indian society. Both of them have soft corners for women and both of them have presented women struggling against exploitation dealing with the issues like gender discrimination, class conflict, homosexuality, child sexual abuse and the plight of the eunuchs which are often kept aside as fringe issues. To depict reality on the stage, Vijay Tendulkar deals with the Dalit characters who are his protagonists and Dattani deals with the middle class urban family. Thus both of them have dealt with and have presented the hidden and burning reality of the contemporary society on the stage. By doing all these, their main endeavour is to establish a value for human relations.
